In the west, Tantra is often confused with notions of hypersexuality and boundary-lessness. These things are not Tantra nor the roots of its teachings. In actuality Tantra is a vast landscape of practices and principles that open us to being in the Now- to being completely present in this moment in all its authenticity, without the internal mental chatter of our inner critic, our regrets of the past or fantasies of the future, or the need to hide behind a mask of personality that was developed in childhood to get us love. Tantra is authentic connection to the Universe- putting our attention on what is real. We are spiritual beings having a human experience, and we have the opportunity to embrace our physical embodiment, emotional and sensual sensations and mental capacity with awe and reverence.
One of the translations for this Sanskrit word is “expansive weaving”. To me, this concept acknowledges that we are made up of many aspects. One of the reasons archetypes resonate so deeply with us is because we hold the aspects of each archetype within. Our warrior, our lover, our high priest or priestess, our wounded child and our ecstatic child are just a few examples of the archetypes we embody. When we can fully embrace every part of ourselves- even the parts our culture tells are “bad”, we integrate and own another aspect of our life force, another piece of our personal divine power, thus weaving our own lives into a place of great expansion. We are invited to witness our miraculousness- our own divine essence – as well as the divine essence of others. The practices of tantra offer us the opportunity to be present with what is, without judgments or projections.
The question turns to, “How can I do that- embrace all of myself and put my attention on what is truly real?” One belief in Tantra is that anything can be a gateway to enlightenment- enlightenment being understood as complete and authentic connection to Now- if done with conscious awareness. Meditation, visualization, yoga, and dance are all practices which can be gateways and are known as White Tantra, or the intention of connecting to and consciously loving the Self. Sexual practices can also be a gateway. If you choose to engage in practices with another person, known as Red Tantra, it is best to first have a deep awareness of Self. Those with a solid foundation of White Tantra practice find the benefits of Red Tantra to be much sweeter.
The concept of tantra as “conscious loving” was introduced to American culture about 30 years ago. The conscious intention to love gives more power in our lives around love. Too often we hear tales of “I couldn’t help it- I fell in love.” and again with “I couldn’t help it- I fell out of love.” This tends to make our relationships dramatic and chaotic. But if we harness the conscious intention to love, the idea that we can generate love, we can choose love in any situation. Embracing White and Red Tantra practices in long-term relationship can also keep emotional and sexual intimacy alive and juicy.
